How much:<\/strong><\/td>\n30% of the cost (not including installation\/labor costs<\/a>), up to $1,500<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Timing:<\/strong><\/td>\nTax credit in effect in 2009 and 2010. Must be installed in your “principal residence”<\/a> between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Details:<\/strong><\/td>\nFrom June 1, 2009\u00a0 – December 31, 2010 windows (and doors and skylights) must have a U-factor<\/a> and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)<\/a> less than or equal to 0.30.<\/p>\n

From January 1 – May 31, 2009 all ENERGY STAR qualified windows, doors, and skylights\u00a0qualify, except for doors in several counties in California**.<\/p>\n

You do not have to replace all the windows\/doors\/skylights in your home to qualify. And it doesn’t need to be a replacement either – installing a new window where there wasn’t one previously (like in an addition) would qualify.<\/p>\n

You can find the U-factor and SHGC on the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label. See an example of the NFRC label<\/a>. NFRC is the only federally recognized organization for determining the energy performance of windows, doors and skylights. Please see the NFRC website<\/a><\/a> for information concerning product performance.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

How to apply:<\/strong><\/td>\nFile Tax Form 5695 with your tax return.<\/a><\/p>\n

You must have a Manufacturer’s Certification Statement<\/a> to qualify.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

**The California counties of Alpine, Lassen, Modoc, Mono, and Plumas have different rules for the tax credit. The tax credit requires compliance with the 2001 Supplement of the 2000 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) or the 2004 Supplement of the 2003 IECC. These CA counties fall into an IECC climate zone that specifies a U-Factor of 0.35 for exterior doors. While there is no SHGC requirement, the U-factor excludes some ENERGY STAR qualified doors.<\/p>\n
